Dons produce a classic away day performance!

The Dons were back on the road again after we produced a decent performance against Wycombe earlier in the week in the Bristol street motors trophy. As the lineups were announced, I was surprised to not see Hus Biler not make it even into the squad as his performance on Tuesday was, in my opinion, outstanding. I heard rumors that he got injured during the game but nothing as of yet has been confirmed.

As for the first half, I thought we played some really nice football. We controlled possession well in midfield and we looked really comfortable and confident on the ball. It was just that finishing touch that was missing that really should have made us take the lead going into half time. Chances in the first half included Ryan Johnson’s free header at the back post of a corner, and Alistair Smiths effort on which he had wriggled through about 3 defenders who was really unfortunate to not see his effort on target. We were also defensively sound as Cheltenham couldn’t get into our half at all.

The second half consisted of a scrappier game than the first half offered. Chances from Joe Pigott after he was slipped through on goal which was well saved by Evan’s. The dons finally opened their account as Ryan Johnson’s delivery was nicely met by Joe Pigott who guided the ball into the bottom left hand corner to give the wombles a 1-0 lead.

We stepped off the gas a little bit after we scored as it seemed we just tried to see the game out. Cheltenham having a few chances, one of which Goodman saved well. But overall not much to shout about from them and the Dons see the game out to win 1-0.

My overall thoughts is that it was a much better performance than Bromley. I think Riley Harbottle slotted in perfectly into that back three of Johnson and Lewis, winning all of his duels and ariel duels, a really solid debut for the 23 year old. For me he was my man of the match. Ipswich will be a test on Wednesday with the return of a familiar face in Ali-Al Hamadi, followed by Fleetwood at home in the league on Saturday.
