Wimbledon take all 3 points in a hard fought game.
I was approaching this game full of confidence as we had beaten Premier League new boys Ipswich Town on Wednesday night - but I knew that this game was going to be quite scrappy. Fleetwood themselves have had a solid start to the campaign, going unbeaten in the league before this match. As for Wimbledon, we were sure to a be a little bit tired from how hard we worked on Wednesday night. With that said, we saw a few players rotated in the side today, with Matty Stevens being replaced by Joe Pigott in the starting 11. This may have come of a surprise to some fans after how well he played on Wednesday, but an understandable one as we don’t want to tire our players out so early into the season and risk a big injury.
As for the game, I thought we were excellent in the first half, with a good spell of possession and some nice movements down the wing which is where I felt we were most threatening from. This is especially the case for Josh Neufville, who sees the ball fall to his feet at the edge of the box, faints his man and tucks it away superbly into the top left corner of the goal.
Second half was where Fleetwood took more control of the ball and definitely had a few chances, however they could not properly test Goodman today. If anything they were more likely to score from a cross into the box because I feel that’s where Goodman makes a lot of his mistakes through not securing the ball properly when he comes to claim. An example of this was Ipswich’s second goal and today when the ball was swooped out of his hands and could of been a goal - was it not for the tight angle it was at for the Fleetwood striker.
We most certainly could have had 3 today, two coming from substitute Matty Stevens who saw his 1 on 1 effort well saved by the Fleetwood keeper. A nearly chance for Joe Lewis as well as his header is just wide of the goal. For me, if we were to get promoted this season we have to win these games comfortably and not hold on to a 1-0 lead each time. I read earlier of how many chances we had in the box today and it was incredible how many shots or attempted shots we had. Maybe just a little more composure in those areas; but that’s just me being picky. A win is a win and we move on Milton Keynes in two weeks time for which I hope the boys are up for it.
Full time: AFC Wimbledon 1-0 Fleetwood Town
MOTM: Joe Lewis 🥇
Also, I would like to see Josh Kelly get more play time. I understand that it’s hard for him to get into the team because of how well Bugiel and Stevens are playing, but he was superb against Bromley and I think he deserves a chance. Give me your thoughts on this as well.
