Wimbledon demolish bottom of the table Carlisle
The return to plough lane. After 3 weeks of no home games being played. Wimbledon are back at plough lane thanks to the many volunteers and people at the club who helped get the pitch back up to shape in a very short period of time.
Wimbledon see off the week by losing to Salford away 1-0 and then narrowly beating Crawley 3-4 in the Bristol street motors trophy, in which probably should of been a comfortable win considering Wimbledon were cruising 3-0 before Crawley hit back.
As for Saturday, the dons face Carlisle United who have had the start they would not of wanted after being relegated from league 1 the season before. Prior to the game, Carlisle sat 22nd in league 2 hovering just above the relegation zone with only 2 wins picked up. They brought in Mike Williamson, who many Wimbledon fans take a large disliking to due to his previous managerial role, and seems to implement a style of football in which seems to simply not work playing in league 2.
Changes from The Salford game include Matty Steven’s coming in for Joe Pigott, Tilley in for Furlong, Ball in for the injured Joe Lewis and Callum Maycock in for Reeves. The game itself brought early delight for the dons with the deadlock being broken inside 10 minutes when James Tilley whipped in a corner in which it seemed to be curling away from the 6 yard box, but found Steven’s head and guided it very nicely into the corner. Tilley, who was causing havoc down the left hand side all game, nearly picked out Ogundere at the back post but he couldn’t quite reach. After some domination from the dons Ali Smith sees an opportunity to take a shot from far out to which the keeper parry’s, leaving Steven’s to tap it home to get his brace.
Many were leaving for their half time pint as the third goal went in, courtesy of an own goal from Harper, which happened from a corner which found its way of Harper’s leg and trickled into the corner. The dons found themselves 3-0 up going into the second half.
The second half had only just begun where Wimbledon had already won a corner to which fell to James Tilley to put a cross to the far post for Steven’s nod home, securing his first dons hattrick. The game seemed to have been done and dusted after the fourth went in. Wimbledon were very relaxed on the ball and had good composure to see the game through.
Full time: Wimbledon 4-0 Carlisle United
Overall a very positive performance from Wimbledon. 6 unbeaten at home. Only two conceded at home which both of those came on the opening day. An incredible start to the season for Wimbledon and long may this continue. Onto Notts County next week.
