Dons snatch a point at the death!
After a 1-3 away win for against Barrow, the Dons will be looking to continue that momentum going into Tuesdays catch up game against Accrington Stanley. Accrington Stanley sit 17th before this game but were 5 unbeaten beforehand. Accrington only have ever been a ‘bogey team’ since Wimbledon have arrived at Plough Lane with the Dons recording 0 wins against Stanley which have both been very high scoring.
The Dons make 1 change as James Furlong replaces Joe Lewis who had a 1 match ban due to the centre half picking up his fifth yellow card at Barrow on Saturday. The game started quite energetically with chances coming left right and centre for the Dons as Matty Stevens sees one if his headers poked wide and a shot skied over the bar. Going into half time the Dons seemed the more likely to score first in the second half if they could just take their chances.
The second half introduced us to all the action as in the 58th minute, Joe Pigott failed to clear his lines after taking a heavy touch just outside the box which then fell to Accrington Stanley’s Khumbeni who rifled it into the top right hand corner to which no goalkeeper is saving. With Stanley’s first shot on goal, it’s 0-1.
Chances arose for Wimbledon such as Furlong just missing out on the stretch as the ball flashed the face of goal. The missed chances seemed to have punished Wimbledon as some questionable defending from Ryan Johnson led to Dara Costelloe to slot the ball home to make it 0-2 to the visitors. Game over? No.
We reach the 90th minute stage and Wimbledon have a freekick, only for it to be easily caught by the keeper, however the keeper confusingly decides to punch the ball rather than catch it which led the ball to fall to Ali Smiths feet as he volleys home his first Dons goal and puts a glimmer of hope in Wimbledon snatching a point. 90+7 , James Tilley moves the ball onto his right foot to which he launches a beauty into the top left corner. 2-2, full time. After you think the game is over, Wimbledon show some of their class to snatch a point.
Full time: Wimbledon 2-2 Accrington Stanley
MOTM: James Ball 🥇
Overall, not a very convincing performance from the Dons but great character to actually take something from the game. Walsall will be tough on Saturday
