Dons end 2024 on a high!
After the controversy of the Boxing Day match against Swindon, the Dons look to secure 3 points against out of form side, Gillingham. A win would take the Dons into 2nd place….
Changes included Omar Bugiel miss out through injury which saw Romaine Sawyers gain his first wombles start. As well as Jake Reeves returning to the side after a lengthy period of being out of action. As for the first half, let’s just say it wasn’t a great advert for the Sky cameras as both sides failed to really test each others defense with the ball mostly being up in the air for 45 minutes. The only chance of the half came to Matty Stevens whose header was well saved by Gills keeper Glenn Morris.
The second half saw the Dons break the deadlock after James Tilleys corner found the ‘shoulder’ of Matty Stevens as he guided the ball into the bottom right of the goal. Wimbledon seemed to sit back for the rest of the game as they failed to register a shot at goal ever since. But that was no worry for Owen Goodman who pulled out some good saves to keep Wimbledon in the game, including a tackle after the Gillingham player was through on goal.
Full Time: AFC Wimbledon 1-0 Gillingham
A very nervy game with very little quality from both sides. Luckily for the Dons, just one moment of quality was enough to win the game. Going into 2025 at 2nd place is incredibly positive and if Wimbledon get this coming transfer window right, they could be on the charts for promotion. Roll on Newport….
