Newport equalize with the last kick of the game!
After a frustrating 1-2 loss to non league side Dagenham & Redbridge which sees the Dons out of the Fa cup, Wimbledon hope to use this loss as motivation to get back to winning ways on home soil.
Newport County were welcomed to Plough lane on Tuesday as they look to get their first win in the league since late October. Wimbledon haven’t won in 5 at home and look to move up higher into those playoff places. If the Dons were to win this one, it would see them up to 5th place…
Due to many injuries, Johnnie Jackson made a majority of changes which included the likes of Josh Kelly making his first league start since the last day of the season back in April. John Joe O’toole came into the side with his first league game since his sending off against Tranmere last season, Ogundere also replaced an injured James Ball. The Dons made a bright start with Tilley and Josh Kelly causing havoc down the left hand side making various chances for Wimbledon. The first goal came when a freekick went into the box from the left foot of James Tilley which found O’Tooles head who placed it nicely for Alistair Smith to poke home his second of the season. 1-0.
The second came 8 minutes later when Matty Stevens nods past Townsend who misjudged the cross into the back of the net. That’s now 9 in the league for Stevens and 13 across all competitions for the Dons target man. However, Newport, without any goal threat before this, find space on the left hand side of the box to which the ball lands kindly for Spellman who tucks it away nicely to get Newport back into a game.
The second half became a nail biting half for the Dons fans as Wimbledon just couldn’t put their chances away. A third goal did go in from Ogundere but was denied his first senior goal by the referee who seemed to have given the goal but then pulled it back for a foul on the keeper. Newport put a fair amount of pressure but failed to do anything, until their striker moves into the box and Dons full back Hus Biler lunges in to give Newport a penalty in what was the final kick of the game. Former Don Mcloughlin steps up and scores. 2-2. Heartbreak.
Full time: AFC Wimbledon 2-2 Newport County
A game which Wimbledon realistically should have seen out and will feel like 2 points dropped rather than 1 point gained. But it’s still early doors and this side is capable of playoffs in my opinion.
MOTM: Josh Kelly 🥇
