Wimbledon Leapfrog Doncaster into 4th place!
After an emphatic win over Harrogate town last Saturday, the Dons hope to make it 4 unbeaten in the league if they were to win against a high flying Doncaster. They won’t be any pushover.
Doncaster come into this game with impressive away form with them going 6 unbeaten in the league so Johnnie Jackson’s men will have to dig deep if they were to come away with the 3 points.
The starting lineup remained the same team that faced Harrogate last Saturday other than one change that saw new signing and experienced championship player Sam Hutchinson into the side, replacing Riley Harbottle in midfield.
The game started with very openly with Doncaster having the better of the chances. First to strike was Luke Molyneux who beat Ogundere to the ball over the top and only had to chip Goodman in goal but couldn’t get the right connection and ball ended up for a goal kick. About 5 minutes later, Doncaster were in again, this time it was Kyle Hurst in on goal after a quick counter attack following a dons corner kick, however once again Hurst fluffed his lines with the whole goal to aim at, he puts it wide.
The game had soon become a ‘next goal wins’ kind of match as both teams looked quite nervy. However a mistake from the back by Doncaster saw the ball land at inform Josh Kelly’s feet who does brilliantly to take it wide and put in a perfect cross to find the head of league twos top goalscorer, Matty Steven’s. 1-0 Dons.
The second half was a case of seeing out the win for Wimbledon as the game became quite ‘gritty’. The most notable chance fell to Steven’s once again after his header was saved on the goal line by the Doncaster keeper. The last ten minutes saw Doncaster throw everyone up the pitch to try and find that equalizer, but the Dons defended well and saw the game out to get a huge 3 points which takes them up to 4th in the league and only 1 point of automatics.
Full time: AFC Wimbledon 1-0 Doncaster Rovers
An excellent display from Wimbledon. Couldn’t fault anyone in the side today. Sam Hutchinson fitted straight in. Kelly proving many people wrong, Bugiel and Steven’s being there normal brilliant selves. Overall a great team performance. The Dons now have a whole week to prepare for the trip away to Chesterfield.
