Wombles consistently inconsistent

Wimbledon look to move into the automatics over the Christmas period as a win over Chesterfield would do just that. Last weekend the Dons put out a statement win against high flying Doncaster which saw Wimbledon leapfrog Doncaster into 4th position. As the games pile up around Christmas time, it’s important that the Dons carry on their league form and maintain a playoff position.

Before this game Wimbledon sat 4th, whilst newly promoted Chesterfield sat 6th. A win for Chesterfield would move them into 5th place and Wimbledon into 6th…

Just the one change from the Doncaster game saw Joe Pigott replace suspended Omar Bugiel in the attacking diamond of Josh Kelly and Matty Stevens. Joe Pigott hasn’t quite replicated his previous spell with the Dons as he has only started 5 league games this season. Only coming off the bench in the rest. The first half kicks off and Chesterfield make an incredibly fast start as Markanday does well on the right hand side after a loose touch from James Tilley allows him to play the ball back into the area for Dobra to tap inside the 6 yard box to give Chesterfield an early lead inside 3 minutes.

The first half saw Chesterfield dominating possession which resulted in Wimbledon offering nothing attacking wise. The second half something had clicked for the Dons as they looked a lot more alive on the ball and looked liked the side we had seen in previous games of late. Some very good chances fell to Alistair Smith and Josh Kelly in the same run of play after both players failed to find the back of the net after the ball managed to hit the woodwork twice. The Dons attacking threat continued over the majority of the second half but couldn’t find the finishing product.

The 90th minute approach’s and the ball finds Joe pigott in the box to surely equalize for his side in the last minute of the game but can only hit it straight at the keeper. Agonizing.

Full time: Chesterfield 1-0 AFC Wimbledon

Incredibly frustrating. There have been too many games where we have had so many chances to score but we don’t and get punished for it. It feels similar to a Port Vale due to a slow start, them scoring and us trying to find our way back into the game but can’t. From today’s game I think it shows how much the team miss and need Omar Bugiel. He’s crucial in the way we play.
