3 wins on the bounce for the Dons!
It’s been a whole fortnight since the Dons last played a football match. Thanks to the snow up in Fleetwood and the frost back down in Wimbledon. However the Wombles are finally back on home soil for the first time this year against a struggling Tranmere side. Before coming into this game, Wimbledon sit 5th but with 3 games in hand compared to the rest of the league. Tranmere sit 22nd only winning 2 away games all season.
Johnnie Jackson makes a few changes with the likes of Joe Pigott coming in for the departed Romaine Sawyers, Issac Ogundere replacing Riley Harbottle and Sam Hutchinson ,who recently signed a new contract with the Dons, fitting into the back 3.
The first half was one to forget as both sides failed to really create anything leaving it to be a really dull contest and looking likely for a stalemate. The only opportunities in the first half was Pigotts strike 20 seconds in which was well saved by McGee. Joe Pigott is still yet to score at Plough Lane since his return to the Dons this season. The other chance came Tranmere’s way as a ball was swung across the box to fine Kristian Dennis’ head which was palmed away by Owen Goodman.
The second half showed why the Dons were in the promotion picture as immediately they went 1-0 up with a superb strike from Josh Neufville who has been excelling this season in the right wing back position. That goal seemed to deflate Tranmere and Wimbledon always looked threatening when they attacked ever since. In the 80th minute, Josh Kelly does brilliantly to get past his man on the right hand side to cross the ball into the box where it strikes the arm of Davies and a penalty is given. Matty Stevens steps up and makes no mistake from the spot as that gives him his 13th goal of the season and 17 in all competitions.
A late decision led to Tranmere’s Drysdale to be sent off due to dissent.
Full Time: AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Tranmere
A dull first half but a brilliant second half. Josh Neufville, Josh Kelly and Owen Goodman the stand outs today. Also good to see Joe Lewis back from injury as he gets a few minutes at the end. Now onto the big one next week….
MOTM: Josh Neufville 🥇
